COSTA MESA, Calif. —At approximately 1:08 p.m. on Oct. 20th, a collision involving a tan truck and a gray hatchback occurred on southbound Interstate 405 just south of Bristol Street, in Costa Mesa, California. According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, the gray hatchback collided with the right-hand shoulder guardrail, deploying its airbags. Debris from the accident scattered across the slow lane, partially obstructing traffic.
Both vehicles came to rest on their sides, and a utility pole was left partially in the slow lane with exposed wires. The Freeway Service Patrol arrived at the scene and moved the pole to the shoulder. Due to the exposed wires, Caltrans crews were requested to secure the area and safely remove the pole.
Officials confirmed that the wires were secured and the pole had been removed from the shoulder. An officer reported that the vehicles sustained major damage but were not blocking traffic lanes, remaining on the right shoulder for approximately one to one and a half hours.
Despite the severity of the crash, no injuries were reported. The cause of the crash is under investigation. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the California Highway Patrol.
Who Could Be Liable and the Importance of Medical Attention
Liability may rest with one or both drivers, depending on the outcome of the investigation. If a driver was found to be negligent—perhaps by speeding, texting while driving, or failing to maintain their lane—they could be held responsible for the damages caused.
Even though no injuries were reported at the scene, it’s important to recognize that some injuries, such as whiplash, concussions, or internal issues, may not manifest immediately. Symptoms can appear days or even weeks after an accident. If you were involved in this collision or begin to experience any discomfort, please seek medical attention promptly.
